What you will be learning to create:

Start by making a new file, I used 1024*768.

Set the background color to black with a slight offset to purple.
Grab the Magnetic Lasso Tool (L on keyboard) set the feather to 25px, select an area and fill it with white.


With the selection still active hit Filter > Render > Difference Clouds, now deselect.

I added some more contrast to the clouds by adding some more black and white to them.

Hit Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and set the following parameters: (don’t forget to also adjust the Blur Center to be more towards the bottom)

This should give you the following result:

Hit Image > Adjustments > Color Balance and set the following parameters:

Now duplicate this layer (CTRL + J), make sure its above the original layer, and set the following parameters by hitting Image > Adjustments > Color Balance again:

Grab the eraser tool and erase the green as seen on the following image:

Set the Blending mode to Overlay.

Duplicate the original (purple) layer again and make sure it's on top. Set the following parameters by hitting Image > Adjustments > Color Balance again:

Grab the Eraser Tool (E on keyboard) and erase the blue as seen on the following image:

Set the Blending mode to Overlay.

Duplicate the original (purple) layer again and make sure it's on top yet again. Set the following parameters by hitting Image > Adjustments > Color Balance again:

Set the opacity to 50%, blending mode to Color Dodge and erase where this layer covers the blue and green layers.

I adjusted the bottom glow a bit by covering it with some black.

Your layers now should look like this:

Next create a new layer, select the Brush Tool (B on keyboard), set the color to white (#FFFFFF) and right click on the canvas. Set the following parameters:

Create some stars/dots with the 3 pixel brush, also join in some 5 pixel stars/dots. This was my result:
Add a few 8 pixel dots/stars.
Go to the blending options > outer glow and set the following parameters: Blend Mode: color Dodge Opacity: 75% Color: #b384f9 Spread: 2% Size: 5px
This should give you the following result:
That was the background, now for the 'X'. Create a new layer with the letter 'X', I applied the following parameters:
This should give you this:
Go to the Blending options > Drop Shadow and set the following parameters:
Blending options > Outer Glow and set the following parameters:
Blending options > Gradient Overlay and set the following parameters:
Blending options > Stroke and set the following parameters:
This should give you the following result:
Creat a new layer and select the Pen Tool (P on keyboard).

Make a similar selection to the image below and afterwards hit the right mouse button, and select Make Selection:

Hit CTRL + ALT + SHIFT and click on the layer containing the letter 'X'


Fill this selection with white and drop the opacity of the layer to 50%.

Select the Eraser Tool (E on keyboard) and set the following parameters by right clicking on the canvas:

Gently erase some of the top. See the following image:

And the final result:
